Wooden Boat Ticket Prices & Departure Times from Cua Dai Port to Cu Lao Cham Island
Everyone told you to take the Cham Island speed boat; it’s faster, about 20 minutes tops. But you wanted something slower, calmer, more connected to the water. Cham island wooden boats take about 1 hour and 30 minutes, sometimes a bit longer if the waves are rough. There’s no air-con, no frills, just a wooden deck, simple benches, and the sound of water slapping against the hull. It felt… raw, like traveling back in time.

The weather makes a huge difference.
- March to August → Best months, calmer seas, clear skies.
- October to February next year → Risky. Some days, the boat won’t operate because of rough seas.

Cua Dai Port: What to Expect Before Boarding
Cua Dai Port itself is pretty simple, but it gets packed around 7 a.m. There are small stalls selling coffee, bánh mì, and a quick breakfast if you need one. Parking is easy if you’re on a motorbike (10,000 VND for the whole day).
There’s also a waiting hall, but it fills up quickly, so most people hang around outside under the trees. If you like taking photos, walk to the end of the pier before departure — you can get a nice shot of the boats lined up with Cham Island faintly visible on the horizon.
My Personal Tips for a Better Trip
- Arrive early: At least 7:15 a.m. to avoid stress.
- Choose a left-side seat: Better views heading out, less direct sun.
- Bring cash: There’s no ATM at Cu Lao Cham, and some stalls don’t take cards.
- Pack light: Carrying big luggage onto the wooden boat is a nightmare.
- Check the weather: Don’t risk rough seas; it’s not fun when the boat starts rocking.
- Book return tickets: Ask your ticket counter if they can secure your spot for the return trip.
If you want to get to Cu Lao Cham Island fast and without fuss, sure, take the speed boat. But if you want to feel the journey, hear the engine hum, smell the sea, and watch Hoi An slowly disappear behind you, the wooden boat has its own kind of magic.
